A City Shaped by St Cuthbert

Durham owes its existence, in large part, to a saint. In 995 the community of St Cuthbert, who had carried his body from place to place since leaving Lindisfarne in the face of Viking raids, settled on a high, wooded peninsula wrapped in a loop of the River Wear. The Norman cathedral begun there in 1093 was built to house his shrine, and it remains one of the great Romanesque buildings of Europe. Together with the castle beside it, the cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

The cathedral also holds the tomb of the Venerable Bede in its Galilee Chapel, linking the city to the scholar whose history of the English Church is still read today. Its massive pillars, carved with chevrons, spirals and flutes, show how Norman masons used pattern and rhythm to draw the eye upward. You can learn more about the building on the official Durham Cathedral website.

Few places make the psalmist's picture of God as a sure foundation feel more tangible than this cathedral on its rock:

"The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer" (Psalm 18:2, KJV)

The treasures of Cuthbert

When Cuthbert's coffin was opened in 1104, ahead of the move to his new shrine, a small gospel book was found inside. Now known as the St Cuthbert Gospel and cared for by the British Library, it is the earliest intact European book, still in its original binding. Objects like this remind us that faith and careful making have always belonged together.

Bringing Something of That Beauty Home

Few of us live beside a Norman nave, but a well-chosen print can bring a measure of the same reverence into a room. Our full range of Christian art prints spans styles from sacred iconography and Renaissance painting to folk art and contemporary abstraction, so there is something for a stone cottage in Weardale as well as a student room on the peninsula.

Prayer corners and quiet rooms

Many Christians find it helps to set aside a small space for prayer, even if it is only a shelf with a candle and a Bible. An A5 print of praying hands or a simple cross can anchor that space and gently call you back to it each day.

College rooms and chaplaincies

Durham is a university city with a strong collegiate tradition, and college chapels and chaplaincies are part of its rhythm. Students setting up a room for the year, or chaplains preparing a space for reflection, often want art that feels reverent without being heavy. An A4 print on good card is an inexpensive way to achieve it.

Marking the Christian Year in County Durham

Parishes in the city and in the former mining villages around it have long kept the church year with care. Our Advent, Lent and Easter artwork follows that pattern, with designs for the hush of Advent, the gladness of the nativity, the self-examination of Lent and the light of the empty tomb. Seasonal pieces are released as each season approaches, so a porch noticeboard or a family mantelpiece can keep step with the calendar.

Prints also make good gifts at these turning points, whether for a godchild at Christmas, a confirmation candidate at Easter or a newly ordained deacon at Petertide. A framed verse, chosen with care, often becomes a keepsake long after the day itself.

Your purchase is delivered instantly as a print-ready PDF, with optional bleed and crop marks, and a high-resolution JPEG, both at 300 DPI. That gives you real flexibility:

  • Print at home on matt photo paper or heavyweight card for a soft, gallery-like finish.
  • Take the PDF to an independent printer or copy shop; it is set up so it can be printed accurately without resizing.
  • If you study or work at the university, campus print services can be useful for quick, low-cost proofs before you commit to fine-art paper.

Questions from Durham

Is Christian Artists based in Durham?

No. We are an online-only shop with no premises in Durham or elsewhere, and we serve customers across the whole of the UK through instant downloads. That means someone in the city centre, in Chester-le-Street or in a Weardale village receives exactly the same files at exactly the same speed, ready to print wherever is most convenient.

Can I print a design large enough for a church wall?

Each design is supplied at A5 and A4 at 300 DPI, which gives crisp results at those sizes. For a larger wall, a group of A4 prints arranged together can be very effective, especially when the pieces share a style or theme. If you have a particular space in mind, use our contact form to tell us about it.

Do you have prints suitable for Advent and Lent?

Yes. Our seasonal range covers Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter and Pentecost. These designs are released in season rather than all year round, so it is worth checking the seasonal section of the shop as each part of the church year approaches. They work well in church porches, on display boards and at home.

What paper should I use for printing at home?

For an A5 or A4 print that will be framed, a heavyweight matt photo paper or smooth art card of around 200 to 300 gsm gives a rich, even finish, while satin paper adds a little sheen. Use your printer's highest-quality setting, choose the matching paper type in your print settings and let the ink dry fully before framing.

Can I pay with PayPal or Apple Pay?

Yes. Checkout is handled securely by Stripe, which accepts debit and credit cards along with Apple Pay and Google Pay, or you can choose PayPal instead. Once payment is confirmed your downloads are available immediately, and an email with your download links follows so you can return to the files later.
