Where the Bible Was Copied on the Wear
Few English cities can claim a part in the story of the Bible quite like Sunderland. At Monkwearmouth, on the north bank of the Wear, Benedict Biscop founded St Peter's monastery in 674. It later became one half of the twin monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow, the community in which the Venerable Bede was raised and educated, and whose scribes produced the Codex Amiatinus, the oldest surviving complete Latin Bible. St Peter's Church still stands on the site, and parts of its Anglo-Saxon west wall and tower survive to this day.
A community that spent years copying the Scriptures by hand understood the psalmist's words well:
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105, KJV)
A long love of glass
Bede records that Benedict Biscop sent to Gaul for glassmakers to glaze the windows of his new church, and fragments of early coloured glass have been found at the monastery sites. Centuries later Sunderland became an important glassmaking town, and that craft remains part of its identity. It is a fitting inheritance for anyone who loves the luminous colours of stained glass, one of the themes that runs through our symbolic artwork.
Arts and Crafts at Roker
In Roker, St Andrew's Church is often described as one of the finest buildings of the Arts and Crafts movement. Its chancel holds a tapestry woven by Morris & Co. to a design by Edward Burne-Jones, a reminder that sacred art has always found new ways to tell an old story.
Bringing Scripture Into Sunderland Homes
Our prints carry that love of the Bible into ordinary rooms. Each scripture piece is anchored to a verse quoted in the King James Version and presented in one of nine art styles, from sacred iconography to contemporary fine art. They sit happily in kitchens, hallways and children's bedrooms as everyday reminders of God's promises. Explore our collection of Bible verse prints to find words that fit your home.
Gifts for life's milestones
A print makes a personal gift for a christening, a confirmation, a wedding or an ordination. Because the files arrive instantly, they are a good answer when an occasion comes round sooner than expected: print, frame and wrap on the same day. Our guide to faith-based gift prints suggests verses and themes for different occasions.
Comfort in grief
When someone has died, words can be hard to find. A quiet image of a shepherd, a dove or an open Bible, paired with a verse of hope, can be given to a grieving family or placed beside a photograph at a funeral gathering.
For Churches, Schools and Chaplaincies on Wearside
Churches across the city and its neighbouring towns can use printed artwork to refresh entrance halls, prayer corners and children's areas without a large budget. Teachers in Christian schools and leaders of Sunday groups may find symbolic pieces a helpful starting point for discussion: why a fish, why a wheat sheaf, why bread and a chalice? Hospital, university and workplace chaplaincies often look for calm images to bring warmth to quiet rooms.
The seasons matter too. Advent and Christmas pieces, followed by Lent, Holy Week, Easter and Pentecost designs, are released as each season arrives, ready for display boards, windows and welcome tables.

Questions from Sunderland
Can I visit you in Sunderland to see the prints?
We do not have a shop, studio or showroom in Sunderland, because Christian Artists works entirely online. Every artwork can be previewed on the website, where images carry a light watermark, and bought as an instant download. Once purchased, the files are yours to print wherever suits you, whether at home, at a city print shop or through a print-on-demand service.
Which Bible translation do your scripture prints use?
Our scripture-led pieces quote the King James Version. Its familiar, rhythmic language has shaped English worship for over four centuries, and because it is in the public domain we can reproduce verses faithfully on every print. Each design is anchored to a specific verse, so you can look it up and read it in its wider context.
Is a digital print a suitable christening or confirmation gift?
Yes, and it can be a very personal one. Choose a verse or symbol that suits the person, print it on good paper and frame it, and you have a gift that can hang on their wall for years. Because downloads are instant, it also works when you need something at short notice for a service at the weekend.
Where can I get my download printed in Sunderland?
You have plenty of choice. Independent print and copy shops and photo labs can print the PDF or JPEG on card, photo paper or fine-art stock, and a good home inkjet is perfectly capable at A5 and A4. If you would rather not print yourself, a UK print-on-demand service such as Prodigi can print, frame and deliver the artwork to any Sunderland address.
Do you offer a discount if I buy several prints for our church?
Yes. A bundle discount is applied automatically in the basket: 5% off when you buy two items, 7.5% off for three and 10% off for four or more. That makes it easier to furnish a church hall, Sunday school room or prayer space with a coordinated set of scripture, symbolic or seasonal designs.
