York's Inheritance of Glass and Stone
Christianity has deep roots in York. In 627 Paulinus baptised King Edwin of Northumbria in a small wooden church built for the occasion, an event traditionally remembered as the beginning of York Minster. The present Gothic building was completed in 1472 after around 250 years of work and is one of the largest medieval cathedrals in northern Europe.
The minster is famous above all for its glass. The Great East Window, made by the glazier John Thornton of Coventry in the early fifteenth century, is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country and tells the story of the world from Creation to the visions of the Book of Revelation. The silvery grisaille of the Five Sisters window and the Rose Window in the south transept are equally loved. You can plan a visit through the official York Minster website.
Standing beneath such windows, it is easy to see why light became one of the great images of faith:
"And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:5, KJV)
Parish churches, saints and plays
Beyond the minster, York's medieval parish churches hold treasures of their own. All Saints, North Street, keeps fine fifteenth-century glass, including a window depicting the last fifteen days of the world. On the Shambles, a shrine remembers St Margaret Clitherow, executed in 1586 for sheltering Catholic priests and canonised in 1970. And the York Mystery Plays, a medieval cycle retelling the Bible from Creation to the Last Judgement, are still revived and performed in the city.
Stained Glass Inspiration for York Homes
For a city so shaped by coloured glass, our stained-glass inspired designs feel especially at home. They sit among our symbolic Christian prints alongside the cross, the dove, the chalice and bread, and the shepherd, each image carrying centuries of meaning in a simple form.
Within the walls and beyond
Whether you live in a narrow townhouse inside the city walls, a family home in Acomb or a village beyond the ring road, prints are an easy way to bring colour and meaning indoors. A5 suits a mantelpiece or bedside table, while A4 works well on a hallway or stairway wall. Grouping three related pieces, perhaps a dove, a cross and an open Bible, makes a small display with a clear message.
For York's Parishes, Schools and Chaplaincies
York has a remarkable number of churches for its size, and many host community groups, toddler sessions and lunch clubs alongside worship. Printed artwork can make a draughty hall or side chapel feel cared for. Christian schools and Sunday schools can use images as prompts for prayer and storytelling, while university and hospital chaplaincies may want calm, uncluttered pieces for quiet rooms.
Following the seasons
Our art for the liturgical seasons is released as each season approaches, from the expectancy of Advent and the joy of Christmas to the stillness of Lent, the drama of Holy Week, the brightness of Easter and the fire of Pentecost. Swapping prints as the year turns keeps a display fresh and helps people notice where they are in the Christian story.
Gift Ideas for York Families
A print chosen for a particular person can become a treasured keepsake. For a baptism, a verse of blessing framed for the nursery; for a confirmation, a symbol of the Holy Spirit; for a wedding, words about love from 1 Corinthians; for an ordination, an image of the Good Shepherd. In times of loss, a gentle piece with a verse of comfort can say what is hard to put into words.
If you have a specific verse in mind that you cannot find in the shop, our bespoke scripture artwork service lets you tell us what you are looking for.

Questions from York
Can I buy your prints in a York shop?
No. Christian Artists has no physical shop, gallery or stall in York or anywhere else. We sell online only, and every artwork is delivered as an instant digital download to customers right across the UK. You can browse the full collection on the website, buy in a few minutes and print the files at home or through a print service of your choice.
Do you have stained-glass style designs?
Yes. Stained glass is one of the recurring themes in our symbolic collection, alongside the cross, dove, open Bible, shepherd, chapel, praying hands, wheat sheaf, ichthus, and chalice and bread. These pieces are inspired by the jewel-like colours of traditional church windows, and they print particularly well on smooth satin or photo paper.
Can you create a print with a verse of my choosing?
Our custom scripture art service is designed for exactly that kind of request. Tell us the verse, the occasion and the style you like through the contact form, and we will discuss whether and how we can prepare it for you. Scripture on our prints is quoted in the King James Version, so the request works best with a KJV verse.
How long will it take to receive my files?
Your files are ready the moment payment is confirmed. You can download them straight from the order confirmation page, and we also send an email with your download links. There is no postage and no waiting, so if you need a print for a service or celebration later the same day, you can still have it ready in time.
Is a download better than a ready-made print?
It depends on what you need. A download gives you control: you choose the paper, the size, the frame and where and when it is printed. It also usually costs less than buying framed artwork. If you would rather receive a finished piece, a print-on-demand service can handle the printing and framing for you and deliver it to your home.
